Life is filled with moments of joy and celebration, but it also brings seasons of pain, uncertainty, grief, anxiety, relationship difficulties, and personal challenges. At St Thomas’ Anglican Church, we believe that no one should have to face these struggles alone.
As part of Christ’s ministry of compassion and healing, we are committed to offering pastoral care, prayer, and support to all who seek it. Whether you are facing personal difficulties, family challenges, bereavement, relationship concerns, or simply need someone to listen, we are here to walk alongside you with understanding, respect, and hope.
A Ministry of Christian Care
Throughout His earthly ministry, Jesus welcomed those who were burdened, offering them compassion, healing, and hope. As His Church, we seek to continue that ministry by providing a safe, caring, and confidential environment where people can speak openly about the challenges they are facing.
Pastoral counselling is not about judging or telling people what to do. Rather, it is a ministry of listening, prayer, encouragement, and helping individuals discover God’s presence and guidance in their circumstances. Our desire is to help people find healing, restoration, and renewed hope through the love of Christ.
Anglicare Counselling Services
St Thomas’ Anglican Church works in partnership with Anglicare, the social outreach ministry of the Diocese of Johannesburg, which provides professional counselling and support services to individuals, couples, families, and children.
Where specialised counselling is needed, our clergy may recommend a referral to an accredited Anglicare counsellor or another appropriate professional.
Areas in which counselling may be helpful include:
Grief and bereavement.
Marriage and relationship difficulties.
Family conflict.
Parenting support.
Anxiety, stress, and emotional wellbeing.
Depression and feelings of hopelessness.
Life transitions and personal growth.
Spiritual guidance and faith questions.
Trauma and crisis support.
Pastoral Conversations
Sometimes people simply need someone who will listen without judgement.
Our clergy are available to meet with parishioners and members of the wider community for confidential pastoral conversations, prayer, and spiritual guidance.
These conversations may help individuals discern God’s direction, find strength during difficult times, or simply experience the comfort of being heard.
Confidentiality
All pastoral conversations and counselling referrals are treated with the highest degree of confidentiality and sensitivity.
We recognise the trust placed in us and are committed to providing a safe and respectful environment for everyone seeking support.
When Professional Support is Needed
While the clergy offer pastoral care and spiritual guidance, there are occasions when specialised professional counselling or psychological support is more appropriate.
In these situations, we will gladly assist with referrals to Anglicare or other qualified professionals who can provide the appropriate level of care.
Seeking help is never a sign of weakness. Rather, it is often an important step towards healing, growth, and renewed wellbeing.
Walking Together in Hope
As members of the Body of Christ, we are called to bear one another’s burdens and to encourage one another in love.
Whatever challenges you may be facing, you do not have to face them alone. The Church is called to be a place of welcome, healing, and hope, where people experience God’s love through the care of His people.
If you would like to speak with one of the clergy or enquire about Anglicare counselling services, please contact the Parish Office. We will be pleased to assist you in confidence and help you access the support that is most appropriate for your circumstances.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28
